Tyranid Exocrine! First 40k model for 8th edition

Long time no post - i'm still painting but haven't been taking pictures. More to come!

I painted this Exocrine for the /r/warhammer40k "Summer Hobby Challenge"

Uploaded to coolminiornot too (if you want to mark it's paint score really low and hit me where it hurts)

Exocrines are pretty cool. Big guns, lots of shots, toughness 8 (ooooooooo-wheeeee)

C&C always welcome. Cheers!

Happy New Year!

I went into 2013 with a lot of goals, one of which was to paint more. I hit January pretty hard and completely my Space Wolves half way through. The Monthly Painting Challenge kept me motivated throughout the year and gave me a short term goal to reach for. I gave each army about 3 months of my time to keep things interesting. Even the table and some of the terrain were completed this year.
My Eldar got the short end of the stick and I only have completed that small batch after I lost some motivation around Thanksgiving and my school workload increased heavily due to a capstone class (another goal of 2013 - Get my Master's degree; which i'm currently 93% completed!). However, I have a whole load of Eldar more than half finished which I will complete before jumping back to Tyranids for their new codex (So excited!)

July Painting Challenge! Tyranids and Lord Bolton's sworn Dark Eldar

This month, I pledged to paint:
1 Homunculus
2 Venoms
10 Dark Eldar Warriors
I'll also finish up the last of my Tyranids which all only need one more highlight of green:
1 Trygon
1 Biovore
2 Tervigons
3 Hive guard
32 Termagaunts

I finished my pledge but also got a ravager and razorwing done as well!

The Flayed man. Lord Bolton's banner from Game of Thrones. This is my first time attempting freehand and i'm quite proud of my first attempt.

First time working with green stuff. They turned alright I guess, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

Any exposed skin I painted in this project (the Haemi and one of the warriors) i painted as if they were flayed. The white on his head is his exposed skull. It's a really bad picture regardless but it don't really pick it up to well unfortunately..

Tryanids! The last remaining models from my initial pledge in May and the ones I tacked on in June.

6th edition Hive Tyrant - Now with more kickass?

With the new edition, i've somewhat been rethinking the Hive Tyrant. Is he still extremely overpriced? Yes. However he provides some utilities and options that can really open up a Tyranid army for more potency.

FACT: Old Adversary is a must now

So what makes the hive tyrant so good now? Part of the reason is that while on foot he can have a 2+ save and is one of the only monstrous creatures that can take a "retinue" which also have a 2+ save. While 2+ saves are still devastated by most shooting attacks (especially now with the rise of plasma) it makes him brutal in CC. A second reason, which can be seen as a slight buff for all MCs, is that MCs attacks in CC are ap2 which is incredibly hard to get now without having an effect on your initiative. Finally, physic powers. The Hive Tyrant has 2 and while he can only cast 1 a turn can result in some fairly terrifying results.

Flying Hive tyrant: 285pts
               Wings (60), 2 Twin-linked Devourers with Brainleech worms (30), Old Adversary (25)

Must move 12''- 24'' a turn. Can fire 2 weapons. Can make a sweep attack over a model he flew over in exchange of firing 1 less weapon. Requires a 6 to hit while swooping. Can fire in a 360 degree arch. Twin-linked weapon with 12 shots and on 6s to hit gets to pick who is wounded. Rerolls 1's to wound. And can charge in and still wreck some faces. It's expensive but what he does for the army is critical. He makes whoever is around him absolute monsters and his physic powers (while random) can make him or a unit absolutely disgusting.

Walking Tyrant: 460pts
Armored shell (40), Old Adversary (25), 2 Twin-linked Devourers with Brainleech worms (30),  3   Tyrant Guard (180) with lash whips (15)

Provides a bubble to all those around him much more efficiently than the flying Tyrant. Will destroy just about anyone in close combat especially with being able to utilize lookout sir and with those lashwhips dropping everyone to a lower initiative.

I can't really see a reason to take anything other than the Devourers. Lashwhips are okay but he has a 5 initiative. Boneswords are kind of a waste since he's already cutting through 2+ saves and the only perk is the few times he goes up against a character but more times than not he'll probably blow them up anyway unless they have storm shields...fething storm shields..

There are 2 downsides for the Tyrant. The price is the biggest issue. Is he more survivable now? Yes and no. In close combat; definitely. Against gunfire; about the same which isn't much. His survivability is determined solely on the physic powers he generates which unfortunately are random. His other downside is Eldar. A reoccuring theme with Tyranids that their mortal enemy is now Eldar and still very much Dark Eldar and Grey Knights.

Welcome to Goodbeary, home of the Goodbeary

This blog will be utilized to hold a variety of my Warhammer 40k lists of various sizes as well as notes as to why I chose what I did! I may also include in this blog such things as  reviewing other army lists, codices, Pathfinder/D&D musings, hobby related progress, and whatever else I feel compelled to post.

This blog is going to be used mostly for my own use as a place to keep track of my thoughts and so that I have easy access to my lists and ideas. I certainly welcome any comments that are related to the topics at hand.

I have been involved in the hobby for about 8 years. I have a large assortment of models and several armies (either built, semi-built, or completely unbuilt) ranging from Chaos Space Marines, Tyranids, Space Wolves, Death Korp of Krieg, Dark Eldar, and Necrons. I have some Fantasy armies as well, but they are all nearly unbuilt. Most of the lists I will be making will be focused on these armies, but I may make lists for other armies as well.

For each list, I will rate in on the Goodbeary scale. Ranging from 1 (for a rotten ass Goodbeary) to 10 (A Goodbeary filled with flavor and badass bearyness). This will help gauge my happiness with a particular list.
